It is exciting to work with these artists from the region who have very much pushed their own boundaries and demonstrated change in their materials, style and discipline.
In my submissions for metamorphosis, I explore the narrative of the destruction of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church just steps away from my home studio in Aylmer, Quebec. The church experienced a fire in 2009 which destroyed most of the construction. The congregation needed to re-locate their worship at a local monastery while a long, slow clean-up of the site began. Each piece tells part of this story and the church and its congregation returned and grew stronger from the experience.
One stands witness, in the second work, to a hushed winter scene where the abandoned shell of the church stands. Six years have passed in time as one views the final work, testimony to the perserverence of the parishioners of the community of St. Paul’s. In March, 2015, St. Paul’s celebrated the opening of their new building incorporating the ruins of the façade as grande entrance, a rejuvenation of the community.
As many already know, I lived and worked in Kemptville for 15 years and during this time made many friends and colleagues. In my previous post I spoke about the residency at Geraldine's Gallery, 1505 Hwy 43 in Kemptville, Ontario. Early in August, I enjoyed the experience of focusing on watercolour on the grounds of the heritage home this gallery owner Geraldine Taylor, artist, community activist owns.

Now I present works from my collection of the past 5 years called: It's All Part of the Journey, from August 20 to October 10. There are 18 works in the encaustic medium I am so fond of. Come drop by, and browse in the large room to experience to rich textural display they offer.

I hope to see you there!

Nestled in the growing hub of Kemptville is a little oasis called Geraldine's Gallery in the midst of all the housing and commercial development. It is an art gallery with a remarkable collection of regional and Canadian artists, many of national acclaim. Geraldine Taylor also is a successful curator, gallery owner, real estate agent and community activist well known in eastern Ontario.

She also devotes part of her gallery to an Artist's Residency so that artists may take an extended time to work and be inspired by the art you see everywhere as you spend a week or a month.

I painted plein-air on the large heritage estate finding tiny delightful vignettes and enjoying the view for an hour or so.

October 14, 21, and 28 I am planning plain-air Saturdays during the breathtaking fall season this year. If you would like to join me or get further details, contact me at headwaterfarms@gmail.com
The facility offered large windows in our classroom and a big space to use our watercolour media.
We had 7 participants with varying levels of backgrounds but all enthusiastic about leaning a new medium.
The school co-ordinator for the Pontiac School of the Arts, France Lamarche offered the setup and support throughout the course as we journeyed through each of the experiments I had prepared. It was a 2-day workshop and on the second day we had developed our skills to try out a composition of our own making with some guidance. Here is the group seriously focused on their paintings on the second day. From left to right:

France Lamarche, Louis Morisette, Jim Hancock, Linda Girard, Nicole Lavigne, Ryan Lamotte and Deborah Kilgour, (Tina Michaud, Photographer and participant)

Thanks for your sense of fun, focus and adventure! You are always welcome to stop by at the studio at 20 Eardley Road in Aylmer (Gatineau) to share and learn more. Try painting this summer and continue to enjoy the medium.

Yellow Lillies $290.

Today I present the common Yellow Lily (Nuphur Advena) found on all our Ontario lakes. When summer months arrive, we sit in a canoe lazily stroking the water's surface as we drift slowly along. It is always an irresistible urge to pluck the flower off its comfortable pad. Instead, its is best to just enjoy the Lily in this watercolour.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-624017644895672965.post-71209302808803087722017-03-07T07:23:00.000-08:002017-05-29T08:40:45.864-07:00Wildflowers of OntarioJust as spring is making its presence known with warmer sunlit days, melting snow and wet streets, I dream of bursts of floral colour to follow in the coming months. Many may already know that I sold the farm in Milford, Ontario where I would take long relaxing walks on the acreage where there was an abundance of wildflowers there to enjoy.

Here is a new series inspired by the warm glow and colours of a summers day on the farm. An early pioneer writer, Catherine Parr Trail in 1868 wrote Canadian Wildflowers of Ontario with hand painted lithographs by Agnes Fitzgibbon. I thought how interesting it would be to revisit that theme of wildflowers but this time pushing toward sprays of colour and texture-Fitzgibbon abandoned!

These became first a series of 18 5" x 7"in. watercolour sketches, some of which were sent to the Pontiac Art Association, Shawville, Quebec. There they will be part of an 'Artists' Exchange' to be re-distributed to participants who offered their work.

I am developing a series of watercolours from those sketches that will be exhibited together in the coming months in the local area. They represent some new techniques that I am pleased to display here today. Let me know what you think!
Next comes my submission for the Reves d'Automne show that takes place every September in the Baie St. Paul area in Quebec.

The traditional skirt begins with 2 yards of 2 different kinds of fabric that compliment each other. Make sure the fabric is washed and ironed before your begin to cut.

Use an imperial measure tape, fold the first fabric and measure down 18 inches. Cut 2 lengths of 18 inches.

Sew 2 lengths together at the edge seam so that you have a very wide 'tube'.

At the top of the skirt, fold a small edge fold and iron. Fold again an inch and sew along the first fold. This will be the elastic casing waist band. Leave just enough room for the elastic and a safety pin to make its way through.

Measure a piece of elastic that will suit your waist. Place a safety pin at one end and make your way through the casing. Join the ends, sew and close up the opening. The waist is complete.

Next you will add a contrasting width of 3 widths of fabric 12 inches wide. Once they are cut, sew them together to make a large closed up width of fabric.

Now it is time to baste stitch the top of this fabric by making a double line of the widest stitch you can make (by hand or by machine). Gather it to fit the bottom of the first length of fabric.

Sew the gathered fabric onto the skirt top placing right sides together, pinning, then stitching.

Topstitch the bottom of the skirt top section.

Now cut 3 widths of fabric in the first pattern you used but this time 6 inches in length. Sew the sides together so it is ready to add onto the bottom of the skirt.

With right sides together, pin and sew this bottom trim onto the end of the skirt for a finishing. Add a border, ribbons or simply hem the skirt as you wish and you have successfully finished the traditional skirt.

I am pleased to tell you all that the show is now in progress and is titled 'Disguised Fragility'. I am most grateful to the gallery team at the Pontiac Art Association for their support in getting this show underway.
The opening was July 18 and it will progress until Sunday, August 10, 2014. The gallery is open from 11-4p.m. or by appointment. Please call me at 613 315 2753 to arrange this.
You will see a collection of taiga landscapes that are at once desolate but yet rich in expansiveness. There are watercolours of sunsets of Hudson's Bay, large shimmering Canadian shield rock faces and stunted, weathered black spruce. See encaustics that are responses to many of the watercolours but have their own richer earthy textural surfaces.
On Sunday, August 10 at 2 p.m., I will conduct an Artist's Talk describing the techniques I use in the encaustic process. I invite you to come and, at that time, see the final day of Disguised Fragility.

What better place to paint! So a small group of us from different backgrounds all gathered at my place on Sunday afternoons this past winter to paint in watercolour.

Here you'll meet Helen Moore, Raymond Memiumskum and Melissa Dempsey as we learned about the characteristics of certain colours, tried new brushstrokes and waded through techniques to achieve some exciting results. Our fuel was the will to improve our techniques, and plenty of cups of laughter and tea!

Our results are included in this small sampling. Every Sunday session resulted in a new watercolour for each of us. Bravo, my watercolour friends. I wish you much success in your creative endeavours!
Here is a sampling of views while walking along the trails in the hillside, looking out on Hudson's Bay and enjoying the spectacular landscape this area offers.

In January 2012, seven brave young men from this Cree community ventured out in the depths of minus 40 degrees and high winds to walk south, first travelling to cross the Great Whale River to Chissasibi and then gathering others who believed in the treaty rights of natives and just this early April they arrived in Ottawa. Theirs is a story that fulfills the Legend of Nishiyuu. They called their long walk the Journey of Nishiyuu, and I have created this commemorative work to celebrate their achievement. No achievement comes without great effort, and theirs will offer them valuable recognition. May their youthful voices be heard.

Detailed information regarding the paintings follows the images. Please comment on the post as I hope you enjoy them.
The students I most closely work with have just entered high school and I know one of their favourite subjects is visual arts. One of my joys is to share that love of art with them, and so I will introduce you to the First Artist of the Week, a young First Nations Cree teenager named Beyoncé Fleming-George who was the first to finish her circular design in primary and secondary colours and moved also to be the first to complete her own personal colour wheel. She enjoys being first and is very proud of her accomplishments in visual arts! Bravo, Beyoncé!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-624017644895672965.post-22068650039405818202012-09-09T07:25:00.000-07:002012-09-09T07:25:50.063-07:00Secondary 1 Students at Badabin School, WhapmagoostuiOn August 17, the DC10 Creebec plane landed at the last stop of their run, Whapmagoostui and I was on it heading for a school year at Badabin School. Above is the view from my kitchen window as I looked toward the SW that very first evening of my arrival to see a lovely welcoming rainbow.

Here you see a brand new class of high school students ready to learn English as a Second language, Mathematics, History, Geography, and of course, Art. Here in this blog, I plan to show all of you their visual art experiences, and my own as I make my way through the winter in this fly-in community on the shoreline of Hudson's Bay and the mouth of the Great Whale River in Quebec.

On August 8,9 I travelled to Valerie Bridgeman's home near Shawville, PQ where eight talented artists gathered to share the medium of encaustic. Val has a lovely studio that offered enough space for all of us to expand our abilities in this ancient medium that has taken on some very contemporary approaches.

As you will see in these illustrations, there was such a wide range of styles these artists brought to the workshop. Val is an experienced printmaker along with her daughter-in-law, Sarah and they explored subtle use of colour with layers of collage and textures. Carol and her daughter, Danuda came along. Carol Noel, a well known photographer and graphic designer explored an integration of her photography with encaustic. Danuda had some fascinating papers to create some Asian influenced collages. Carolyn came to the workshop with her experience in fused glass to create brightly coloured landscapes. Kay enjoyed taking an existed image and transforming it to new textural effects. Cher delved into relief paintings in encaustic using well composed textures layering and building to create amazing works. Sally used natural objects from the landscape to recreate the mood on wood panel.
Many circulated on both levels of the lobby of the theatre, drank wine, chatted with friends, and remarked on the works. Thank you for coming, and if you weren't able, try to make it before August 22.
It was a juried show and many artists who vacation or live in the Frontenac area were invited to submit works of art.
I sent this piece that is a four part panel in encaustic that is 72"x24" and is intended to immerse you in the Frontenac Park where I have canoe camped. The fall colours invite you to share the experience.
I won an Honourable Mention at the opening on Friday, June 7 this month. It was a privelege to share the stage with other artists who exhibit their love for this region as well. Here is a look at the piece.
Dennis has a lovely condo that steps directly onto the gulf sands and the ocean. Visiting for the first time, I took that as a regular convenience most condos offered until I began to speak to an elderly couple that vacationed in the next unit. They explained that this condo was quite unique, that it reflected 'the Old Florida' where probably back in the early twentieth century before so much luxurious highrise development, most vacationers could easily find shoreline getaways at an affordable cost. This exquisite condo is called The Diplomat Beach Resort directly on the Gulf of Mexico.
Here I'm presenting to you the first in a series of beach scenes from what I titled as Old Florida. As you enjoy the crocuses and daffodils of early spring of Canada, feast your eyes on these royal terns and sandpipers that made this gulf shoreline their home.
While you're lingering on my blog, have a look at the Celebration of Spring series I painted in 2011. And Happy Spring!
I make reference through photo transfer of Kayaking for Cancer; celebrating my birthday at Opinegon; and of course, the trusty cargo canoe.
As we clutch our smartphones and attempt to squeeze an impossibly busy set of events into the day, we are even rushed when we attempt to relax.
This post takes me that place that we offer for ourselves when we seek repose and renewal. As visual artists, we are also caught up in that societal frenzy to try and capture some creative inspiration in a cramped couple of hours.
Clutching a camera in hand, a friend, also an artist, sought an escape to the Gatineau Hills to view that last of the glories of our colourful Canadian autumn from the blurred vantage point of the car window.
Streams of reflected colours, sharp accents of light and blurred shapes are captured by the lens. Even leafy shapes are pulled and distorted to the edges of the window.
They are 'Drive By Shootings', an attempt to grasp at beauty that is fleeting, working against time. Even at the end of the day and the end of the season, we clutch for another moment to appreciate in our rush of life.
With my daughter Camille, 29 on a work related trip, and my camera in tow, we arrived in Whitehorse and made our way to Kluane National Park and the majestic foothills of one of the mountain chains in that vast landscape. A week later we travelled further north to Dawson City and along the route saw some inspiring vistas. It is always formidable to take on the challenge of capturing images of the Canadian west.
I well understand Paul Cezanne's obsession with Mount St. Lazare, as he returned to capture it again and again. The mountain became his muse. A landscape can take its grip upon you as you try to capture its monumentality.
With the medium of encaustic on board I began to represent this fragile, transitory slates of nature.

The resulting work now make up a series of four 12" x 12" boards that have become mixed media pieces containing what I saw that day, luminous areas of lines, shapes, pieces of dried leaves, seeds. I also embedded the haiku Bob created to commemorate these delicate formations. I hope you enjoy this collaborative work as well. It claims as its title:
